A-M

  • DITL: darkness in the light
  • BotS: Guild, "Brothers of the Skin".
  • BOO: Guild, "Brotherhood of Oorn".
  • Cockles: aka "***les" (from the filtering in chat). Harmless variety of shellfish, which can be purchased in Innsmouth. Many players find it amusing to collect them or to leave them in other characters' pockets as they pass by.
  • DS: Spell, "Dream Sending". Originally, when used against another player, it raised their insanity; used on oneself, it reduced insanity. Later changed to reduce insanity on either oneself or another.
  • FAK: First Aid Kit, used to treat wounds in the field. The skill "Heal" helps you use it more effectively.
  • FK: Field Kit, which is a portable treatment for poisons and diseases. It requires the skill "Advanced Healing" to use.
  • FotOM: Guild, "Followers of the Old Man".
  • LARD: Guild, "Lanterns Against the Rising Dark".
  • MPRI: Guild, "Miskatonic Paranormal Research Institute". Became RIOR after a merger with several other guilds.

N-Z

  • PM: "Private Message". Usually refers to a message sent through the CN Forum, but might also refer to a "whisper" message sent in the chatroom.
  • RIOR: Guild, "Royal Institute of Occult Research"
  • RP: "Role Play". Some players like to speak and write as though they were really their characters in 1924, so that "real life" doesn't intrude. It can be fun, and gives an added depth to the game even for those who don't do this, but there's no strict requirement for it in CN.
  • Squircle: From "squared circle". The common term for the colored dots that indicate players, monsters and quests in neighboring tiles. Red squircles are monsters; blue squircles are other players; yellow squircles mark the start of a quest.
  • ToA: Spell, full name "Touch of Azathoth". It targets another player's mind, often driving them completely insane; this is often described as "getting ToA'd".
  • Tonturu: The Sword of Tonturu is a remarkably effective weapon, the preferred choice of adventurers around the world. It cannot be bought in a store, but rather must be forged by a player skilled in that craft. Nobody seems to know who, what, or where "Tonturu" was...
  • UFLotO: Guild, "United Free Lodge of the Orient".
